Divya & Rajan: A Golden Hindu Ceremony in Port of Spain
When Divya Maharaj and Rajan Sookdeo began planning their wedding, they had one non-negotiable: it had to honour the traditions passed down by their families for generations. What unfolded over two sun-soaked days in Port of Spain was nothing short of extraordinary.
The Ceremony
The mandap was draped in cascading marigold garlands — the signature orange-gold that marks the holiest of Hindu unions. Pandit Ramoutar, who has officiated weddings in Trinidad for over 30 years, led the fire ritual as Divya, radiant in a deep red and gold lehenga, circled the sacred flame with Rajan. Family members from both sides watched, many moved to tears by the ancient Sanskrit mantras that filled the air.
The Reception
By evening, the celebration shifted to the ballroom of a central Port of Spain venue, transformed into a jewelled garden. Three hundred guests were treated to a Trinidadian feast that ranged from delicate aloo pies to whole roasted meats. The DJ's set began with classical chutney and seamlessly blended into soca as the night deepened, with not a single person left sitting by midnight.
"We wanted our wedding to feel like T&T — colourful, joyful, and completely ours. Every vendor we found through IslandVows understood exactly what we were going for and delivered beyond what we imagined."
Divya and Rajan's wedding is a testament to the richness of Indo-Trinidadian culture — a living, breathing tradition that grows more beautiful with each new generation that embraces it.
