Priya & Dev: A Modern Catholic Ceremony in San Fernando
There's a particular kind of elegance to a well-executed Catholic wedding in Trinidad. The formality of the church, the solemn exchange of vows — followed by the complete and utter abandonment of all formality the moment the reception begins. Priya and Dev's wedding in San Fernando embodied this contradiction perfectly.
The Ceremony
The couple married at a historic church in San Fernando's south, a building that has witnessed generations of Trinidadian love stories. Priya wore a fitted lace gown with a cathedral length veil; Dev was in a classic ivory suit. The church choir sang Ave Maria as she walked the aisle to a pew packed with 250 guests. Spanish-accented stained glass filtered the June afternoon light into a natural aurora across the nave.
The Reception
The reception at a sprawling garden estate just outside San Fernando was the couple's opportunity to express their full selves. Tables were draped in deep teal and gold — Priya's favourite colours — and centrepieces towered with birds-of-paradise and anthurium. The caterer delivered a five-course dinner, but the real highlight was the live soca band that took the stage at 9 PM and played until the venue's lights came on at 2 AM.
"We wanted our wedding to show both sides of who we are — the sacred and the celebratory. A Trinidad wedding is the only place in the world where that pairing makes complete sense."
Priya and Dev's wedding is a love letter to the south of Trinidad — a region that does Caribbean elegance and Trinidadian revelry with equal confidence and flair.
